Feb 18, 2013 - A giant 50 Megawat solar park will be developed in Guatemala by the Spanish group Ortiz with an initial investment of $27 million.

Nicaragua initiated an $11 million solar program last year. Meanwhile Panama is seeking to expand hydro projects.

President Otto Perez Molina of Guatemala  met in Spain with executives of Grupo Ortiz, during an investment seeking tour of Guatemala.

The planned solar farm will be the largest one in the region, and will contribute to reaching the goal of Guatemala becoming a pole for energy in Central America.

It is reported that the site of the solar park has not yet been defined, although the Minister of Energy and Mines, Erick Archila said that might be in operation in Zacapa from August 2014.

Nicaragua invested $12 million a year ago on a solar park.
